ABOUT US

Welcome to the First Baptist Church of Dumas, Texas. We are honored that you want to know more about us, and we would love to have the opportunity to get to know you too. For almost 130 years, First Baptist Church has been a shining light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Texas Panhandle.

From a group of true baptist pioneers and iterinrant preachers in 1894, First Baptist has grown to be an anchor in the Dumas community and has remained faithful to the Word, faithful to the Gospel, and faithful to the Great Commission ever since. What do we mean by "faithful"?

Faithful to the Word

We have always confessed the Bible to be the Word of God "without any mixture of error," and stand on the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as the inspired, inerrant, and infallible Words of God. Though many in our society reject the authority of the Bible, and though many so called "Christians" are tempted to compromise the truths of God's Word to accomodate that thinking, we believe God's Word to be absolutely sufficient for "life and godliness" (2 Pet. 1:3) and proclaim it as God's power to grow his Church his way (2 Tim. 3:16).

Faithful to the Gospel

The first believers who gathered as a baptist congregation in Dumas did so because they believed the Gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, to be the only hope for sinful humanity. We hold those truths firm to this day. We proclaim the Gospel of the sinless life, atoning death, and glorious resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 15:1-4). The only saving response to this good news is personal faith and repentance toward Jesus as Lord (Jn. 3:16; Rom. 10:9). We believe there is power in this message and we preach it unapologetically (1 Cor. 1:18).

Faithful to the Great Commission

A firm stand on the Bible and the biblical Gospel would be useless if we also didn't believe that this message should be proclaimed and shared with the world. As we stand on the Word and the Gospel of God, we also recognize that God has given us a mission: to make disciples, to baptize them, and to teach them (Matt. 28:19-20). With our forebears, we believe that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only hope for sinful humanity. We stand with them on these central truths, and pray that God would keep us faithful to his mission in the world.

We gladly partner with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention in our cooperative efforts to reach the world with the hope of the Gospel.
